Intensive Outpatient Program Q & A

What is an intensive outpatient program?

An intensive outpatient program, or IOP, is an aggressive addiction recovery program that allows you to continue living at home and attending work or school while you receive treatment for a substance use disorder. IOPs offer many of the same services as traditional inpatient programs without the burden that a residential program can place on your ongoing responsibilities.

What types of addiction can an IOP treat?

Insight Health and Wellness can customize the intensive outpatient programs on offer, to address most types of substance use disorders, including addictions to the following.

  • Alcohol
  • Legal and illegal opioids (pain killers, heroin)
  • Prescription medications
  • Cocaine
  • MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy)
  • Amphetamines
  • Methamphetamines

The team designs personalized, integrative treatment plans for IOPs to meet your unique needs for recovery.

Who can benefit from an intensive outpatient program?

If you have a substance use disorder or a dual diagnosis of addiction and a mental health disorder, and you don’t need immediate medical detoxification services, you may qualify for an intensive outpatient program. Insight Health and Wellness also offers standard outpatient programs, partial hospitalization, and sober living programs.

An evaluation with an experienced, licensed professional at Insight Health and Wellness can help you determine the best recovery program for your individual needs.

How does an IOP work?

The structure of IOPs at Insight Health and Wellness varies depending on the needs of the individual patient. In general, however, IOPs typically involve at least three hours per day of structured treatment services, 3-5 days per week. The team draws on a wide variety of disciplines to create planned treatment protocols using evidence-based techniques.

The team designs integrative, multidisciplinary IOPs that may include services such as:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Treatment of co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Relapse prevention
  • Nutritional and lifestyle counseling
  • Exercise, yoga, and mindfulness training
  • Neurofeedback
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

The team works with your primary care provider to ensure you have comprehensive care, including medication management and monitoring of existing health conditions, during your intensive outpatient program.
