Dating in recovery, the ups, the downs, the pros, the cons.

You've made it! You are at the point in your recovery when you're looking better, you're feeling better and more significantly, you're starting to notice the people around you, and they don't look too shabby either! But how does that impact your recovery?  Can it be positive, or negative? Let's start with the positive: You have someone who understands you, who can relate to you, and who can support you. You may start to experience new things! After-all, dating spots and activities become somewhat more creative in sobriety, and you can enjoy the company without clouded judgment. 

Now for the cons: The big word, relapse. Many believe that dating in early recovery is the biggest contributing factor for relapse. I don't know if I agree yet, but what I do know is that until you love yourself; truly, you cannot love another. If you're there, then you've made it! Embrace and enjoy the new life you have made for yourself, but be mindful. Reduce potential risk factors by working the program, attending meetings and setting realistic, achievable goals with your partner as this can help prevent relapse and ultimately, bring you closer together.
