Art Therapy at Insight

Art therapy has been shown to be an effective component of comprehensive treatment for individuals with both substance abuse and mental health issues (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2005). Through a variety of mediums, such as drawing, painting, collage, photography, and writing, participants have the opportunity to engage in art therapy activities as a means to communicate and process their feelings and experiences here at Insight. Art therapy can provide one with the opportunity to explore, gain a better understanding, and ultimately resolve challenging issues they are dealing with through the process of creative self-expression (SAMHSA, 2005). Furthermore, engaging in art-related activities can relieve stress, increase brain connectivity and plasticity, enhance creativity, and help individuals to work through trauma (Bowlwerk, A. et. al., 2014). At Insight, we believe that the process of engaging in expressive arts-related activities can help one work towards recovery and wellness. Art therapy is offered both in group therapy settings, and individual therapy sessions.
